Introduction

Nagasaki's Confucius Shrine was built in 1893 at the initiative of the Qing government and funded by the city's Chinese community, making it the only full-scale Confucian temple erected overseas by Chinese residents. Rebuilt in 1982 with help from the Chinese government and the Qufu temple in Shandong, it fuses the saturated colour of southern China with the formal proportions of the north: glazed tiles, pale stone balustrades, dragon carvings, a statue of Confucius and 72 disciple figures all came from China, along with a Lunyu text cut from Hualien marble. The vermilion and gold stand out sharply against Nagasaki's sloping streets. The building survived the blast of the 1945 atomic bombing, a rare cultural property to do so in this district. Beside it, the Chinese Historical Museum shows palace objects lent by the Beijing Palace Museum on its second floor and excavated artefacts from the National Museum of Chinese History on the third, both covered by one ticket. The shrine sits on Ouramachi, a three-minute walk from Oura Church, the Dutch Slope and Glover Garden, anchoring a half-day route through Nagasaki's treaty-port and Chinese-heritage quarter. Yin-yang fortune slips and rentable smartphone guides are available.
