Introduction

Set in the green highlands of Sengokuhara, Hakone Glass no Mori is Japan's first museum devoted to Venetian glass. Two wings hold the Venetian Glass Museum — lace glass, goblets and lamps that dazzled European aristocracy from the 15th to 19th centuries — and the Modern Glass Museum for contemporary artists. In the medieval Venetian-style garden, crystal-glass installations mingle with seasonal flowers in the sunlight and look toward Owakudani. A glass workshop, a museum shop stocking some 100,000 pieces and a cafe terrace with daily live music round out the visit, making this a rare pocket of European romance in Hakone.
