Introduction

The Yokohama Archives of History on Nihon-Odōri opened in 1981 and houses some 250,000 documents on the city since its 1859 opening. Its old building — the British Consulate General erected in 1931 and used until 1972 — stands on the site of the 1854 Convention of Kanagawa, beside the tamakusu tree said to appear in Perry's landing prints; the new building's second floor is floored with the 1881 survey map of Yokohama.
