Introduction

The Higashi-Yamate Western-style houses in Nagasaki are a group of seven Meiji-era Western residences built densely on small plots in the late 1880s-1890s, probably as company or rental housing for the foreign community; all seven are city-designated tangible cultural properties. Four now serve as the townscape preservation center, the Old Photo & Archive Museum and the Chikyu-kan restaurant. Western houses and stone steps climb the hillside - one of Nagasaki's most photogenic historic quarters.
