Introduction

The Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands sits on the Sengokuhara plateau in Hakone (about 650 m above sea level), a garden devoted to marsh ecosystems that marks its 50th anniversary in 2026. Roughly 200 wetland plants plus some 1,100 grassland, woodland and alpine species—about 1,700 in all—bloom through the seasons, and boardwalks circle the marsh in a loop of about 40 minutes. Spring mizubasho and katakuri, autumn grasses and maples are highlights, and the highland stays cool in midsummer.
