Introduction

Shofuku-ji (Manjuzan Shofuku-ji) is an Obaku Zen temple on the Tamazono-machi slope behind Nagasaki Station, founded in 1677 by Tesshin Doho, a disciple of Mokuan and thus a dharma-grandson of Ingen. Serving as the meeting place of Cantonese merchants, it was also called Koshu-ji, and with Kofuku-ji, Sofuku-ji and Fukusai-ji forms Nagasaki's 'four blessing temples'. Unusually it enshrines Lord Guan (Kantei), Mazu and Kannon together; its vermilion Daiju-den, Teno-den, belfry and main gate are National Important Cultural Properties, now under major restoration. The 'Tesshin great bell', spared the wartime metal collection, is Nagasaki's largest temple bell, and the waste-tile kawara-kabe wall is a photographers' favourite. The 1867 Iroha-maru incident talks between the Kishu and Tosa domains were held here, a Sakamoto Ryoma statue was added in 2020, and the film 'Solve Summer' shot on location.
