Introduction

The Silk Museum on the 2nd floor of the Silk Center building in Naka-ku, Yokohama, opened in 1959 to mark the port's centenary, on the former site of the British trading house Jardine Matheson ('English House No.1'). Displays trace the whole process from sericulture and reeling to weaving, with live silkworms and working looms, plus Edo-period kimono and works by Living National Treasures - the meeting of Yokohama's raw-silk port history and silk culture.
