Introduction
The Tojin-yashiki (Chinese Residence) site is the Edo-period compound where the shogunate confined Nagasaki's Chinese population, on the hillside behind Shinchi Chinatown in Kannaimachi. Built in 1689, the walled and moated quarter covered some 9,400 tsubo — three times Dejima — and housed as many as 2,000 Chinese in about twenty tiled row houses. Declining after the 1784 fire, it was abolished when Japan opened in 1859, the community moving to neighbouring Shinchi Chinatown. Today the site holds four temples — Toshin-do, Tenko-do, Kannon-do and the Fujian Guild Hall — corner boundary stones and the free Kura Shiryokan opened in 2015: a witness to Sino-Japanese exchange under seclusion.
