Introduction
Higashiyamate No. 13 is a blue-grey timber Western house at the foot of the Dutch Slope, built around 1894 and registered as a national tangible cultural property in 2007. It began as rented housing in the foreign settlement, home to the manager of the HSBC Nagasaki branch and staff of Holme Ringer & Co. From 1939 to 1956 the French vice-consul André Bukary lived here and the house doubled as his consulate; during the war he was interned for ten months at a camp in Saga. His adopted daughter Mitsuyo Katsuki later ran a boarding house here for Kwassui students, and for years the building operated as a cafe. Today the ground floor is a retro coffee room serving Dutch coffee and chestnut-jam sandwiches; upstairs, period furniture and old photographs sit behind a gently creaking wooden stair, and the veranda looks over the Dutch Slope toward Nagasaki harbour. A heart-shaped shrub in the garden is the detail most visitors photograph.
