Introduction

Makomanai Park is the main venue legacy of Sapporo 1972. The outdoor speed-skating rink hosted the opening ceremony and speed skating, while the indoor arena held figure skating, ice hockey and the closing ceremony. After the Games, Hokkaido turned the 85-hectare site into a public park, opened in 1975. The Olympic cauldron remains, both arenas are still in use, and roughly ten kilometres of paths loop through the woods where the Makomanai and Toyohira rivers meet. Locals run here in summer and ski the groomed cross-country tracks in winter; dogtooth violets carpet the forest floor in May and the autumn colour draws photographers from across the city. The Sapporo Salmon Museum, added in 1984, tells how the fish returned to the river.
