Introduction

Sanno Shrine — formally Urakami Kotaijingu — in Sakamoto, Nagasaki, enshrines the three Sanno deities. When the atomic bomb fell on 9 August 1945 some 800 m away, the blast flattened the grounds but left one pillar of the second torii standing: the famed 'one-legged gate'. The centuries-old camphor, scorched half to death, sprouted again and is now a city-designated natural monument and a symbol of peace and renewal.
