Introduction

Soseigawa Park runs 820 metres through central Sapporo along the Sosei River, from Minami 4-jo to Kita 1-jo — some 18,000 square metres of riverside green completed in 2011. The river began as the Otomo-bori irrigation canal cut by Otomo Kametaro in 1866, took its name from the 1874 Sosei bridge, and long divided old Sapporo east from west. Paths that dip to the water's edge, 18 artworks, about 200 lilacs in May and the winter illumination of Sosei bridge are its charms.
