Introduction
The Migishi Kotaro Museum of Art, nicknamed 'mima', grew from 220 works donated in 1967 by the family of Sapporo-born painter Kotaro Migishi (1903-1934); the gift founded the Hokkaido Museum of Art, and this dedicated museum opened at the present site in 1983. In just thirty-one years Migishi moved from Fauvism and Expressionism toward Surrealism, and his late 'Butterflies and Shells' remains a singular work in Japanese modern Western-style painting. The museum stands on the north side of the Hokkaido Governor's Residence garden among lawns and a red-and-white mansion, and beyond its collection shows hosts concerts, children's programmes and young-artist projects.
