Introduction
Built in 1936 as the new villa of the Mitsui family, the Hokkaido Governor's Official Residence passed to the prefecture in 1953 and has served since as the governor's residence and a venue for meetings and events. Its red half-timbered beams against white plaster and a broad front lawn make it a rare Showa-era Western-style mansion in central Sapporo; it was designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1999 and named among Sapporo's 100 hometown cultural sites. Inside, high ceilings and original furnishings sit alongside crafts from China and Thailand and a bat used by baseball legend Sadaharu Oh, while the garden preserves pit-house remains over a thousand years old. The Migishi Kotaro Museum stands at the garden's north end.
