Introduction

The Shin Marunouchi Building was completed and opened in April 2007, directly opposite the Marunouchi exit of Tokyo Station. At 198 metres, designed by the British architect Michael Hopkins and developed by Mitsubishi Estate, it connects underground to the station; its predecessor was an eight-storey 1952 block of the same name. Some 153 shops and restaurants fill the lower floors, making it the handiest place in Marunouchi to eat, browse or wait out the rain. The best free thing here is on the seventh floor: the outdoor terrace wrapping the Marunouchi House dining level faces the full 335-metre red-brick Tokyo Station facade, giving an eye-level view of the roofs and both domes that is the most comfortable photo angle in the district. There are plants and seats, so you can settle in until dusk. The station's illumination ends at 21:00 even though the terrace stays open later, so do not leave the lit shot too late, and tripods are not allowed. Dining floors run to 23:00 on weekdays and Saturdays, to 20:00 on Sundays and holidays, with closures on 1 January and for statutory inspections. For a Tokyo Station walk, add the sixth-floor KITTE roof garden, the gravel expanse of the Imperial Palace outer garden and Marunouchi Naka-dori, all within ten minutes on foot.
