Introduction
Founded in 1681 by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi for his mother, Gokoku-ji is a Buzan Shingon temple in Bunkyo's Otsuka. Its Genroku-era hondo and Kannon-do survive as Tokyo's finest Edo-period architecture, and it is the 13th of the Edo 33 Kannon sites. The temple enshrines a Nyoirin Kannon of natural amber, has a 2.5 m Buddha and a tea house moved from Miidera, with cherry trees across the grounds — a quiet retreat by Ikebukuro.
