Introduction
Kaneiji is a Tendai temple founded at the request of the Tokugawa shogunate and opened in 1625 in Ueno. Once one of Edo's largest temples, it enshrined successive Tokugawa shoguns; much of today's Ueno Park originally belonged to its precincts.
