Introduction

The Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque stands in Shah Alam, the capital of Malaysia's Selangor state. Known to Chinese travellers as the 'Blue Mosque' for its luminous blue dome, it is the largest mosque in Malaysia and one of the most representative Islamic buildings in Southeast Asia. Completed in 1988, its main dome spans 51.2 metres and rises about 106 metres — among the largest mosque domes in the world — while four minarets reach 142 metres, once the tallest in the region. Clad in blue-and-white glazed tile with intricate motifs and set in vast courtyards, it conveys a solemn yet serene elegance and can hold more than ten thousand worshippers.
