Introduction

Gunkanjima (officially Hashima, also called Battleship Island) is a derelict industrial islet off the southwest coast of Nagasaki, Japan, whose dense concrete apartment blocks and factory silhouette resemble a warship — hence the nickname. From the late 19th through the 20th century it boomed on undersea coal, once ranking among the world's most densely populated places with over five thousand residents at its peak, complete with schools, shops and a hospital. When the mine closed in 1974 the island was fully evacuated and left frozen in time as a 'ghost town' at sea. Licensed tour boats have visited since 2009, and in 2015 it was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution.' Its rusting tenements, encircling sea wall and silent streets make it a mecca for ruin and industrial-heritage enthusiasts and a film location.
