Royal Palace

Introduction

The Royal Palace stands within the UNESCO World Heritage ancient city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, the ruined palace complex of the Sinhalese monarchy from the 4th to 10th centuries. Surviving foundations, brick walls and rows of stone columns still evoke the grandeur of the original multi-storey timber palace; nearby lie the royal bathing pool, the Audience Hall and monastery ruins, together sketching the royal and religious life of this millennial Buddhist capital. With Kandy and Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura forms the core of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle; the palace ruins, alongside the great Bodhi tree (Sri Maha Bodhi) and stupas, tell of an island civilisation and faith sustained for over two thousand years.
