Introduction
The Leuven University Library on the Grote Markt is itself an epic of war and peace: the original was burned in WWI, rebuilt after the war with American funding true to the original, its tower soaring and reading hall grand; it was devastated again in WWII and restored once more. Today the library is both a scholarly powerhouse and a symbol of remembrance and reconciliation, holding vast rare books and manuscripts. From the tower you overlook Leuven; a memorial hall inscriptions the names of donor alumni—a reminder of how precious knowledge and memory are.
