Introduction

The Kazanlak Rose Museum is the world's only museum devoted entirely to roses. It presents the centuries-old history and culture of rose growing, picking and rose-oil distillation in Bulgaria's Rose Valley, offering an excellent window into the country's world-famous rose industry and rose culture. As the source of top-grade rose oil, Bulgaria's Rose Valley has a long rose-growing tradition, and this museum concentrates it. Through objects, photographs, documents, old pictures and tools, it covers the cultivation history of the Damask rose, traditional picking customs, ancient distillation crafts and equipment, the trade and uses of rose oil, and related folklore and festivals, and displays precious items such as old stills and rose-oil containers.
