Introduction

Los Flamencos National Reserve lies in Chile's northern Atacama Desert, spread around San Pedro de Atacama across high-altitude salt lakes and lagoons such as Chaxa and Cejar. It is a key habitat for the three Andean flamingo species — Chilean, Andean and James's (Peruvian) flamingos — where flocks of pink wade and feed against white salt crust and turquoise water, one of the Atacama's most poetic natural wonders.
