Introduction
Los Flamencos National Reserve lies in Chile's northern Atacama Desert, spread around San Pedro de Atacama across high-altitude salt lakes and lagoons such as Chaxa and Cejar. It is a key habitat for the three Andean flamingo species — Chilean, Andean and James's (Peruvian) flamingos — where flocks of pink wade and feed against white salt crust and turquoise water, one of the Atacama's most poetic natural wonders. Andean condors, guanacos and rare highland plants also appear. The dry, saline and volcanic landscape makes it a destination for photography, birding and high-plateau pilgrimage under the stars.
