Introduction

Temuco's railway museum is formally the Pablo Neruda National Railway Museum. The poet grew up here as the son of a railway worker, and locomotives and whistles recur throughout his memoirs and verse, hence the dedication. The site is itself the main exhibit: the old station's locomotive depot and workshops were declared a Chilean National Historic Monument in 1989, placed on the World Heritage tentative list in 1998, and opened as the national railway museum in February 2004. Yards and halls display steam locomotives, passenger carriages, a dining car and railway equipment used in Chile since the early 1900s; some carriages can be entered on a guided tour, with a video introduction and occasional short rides on a 1930s steam train. The story is how rails carried Araucania's timber, wheat and people to the rest of the country, and how a frontier city grew around the line. An unhurried 1 to 1.5 hours suffices. The outdoor locomotives photograph well, but stepping inside the carriages usually means joining a guide. Closed Mondays, Sunday hours shift by season, prices are in Chilean pesos and some dates are free.
