Introduction

Diocletian's Palace is the living core of Split: built around AD 305 as the Roman emperor's retirement residence, a fortified seafront city that never lost its walls - people simply moved in, and about 3,000 still live inside, making it the only Roman palace of its scale continuously inhabited since it was built; the whole old town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
