Introduction
The Nieuwe Kerk stands on Delft's Market Square and is the city's landmark. This Gothic church has the second-tallest church tower in the Netherlands; climbing the several hundred steps to the top rewards you with views over Delft's old town of red-tiled roofs and canals, superb on clear days. The Nieuwe Kerk holds special meaning for the Netherlands—members of the Dutch royal family, including William of Orange (the Father of the Fatherland), rest in its underground royal crypt. The solemn royal tombs and memorial sculptures inside command reverence. As the burial place of the Dutch royal family and the heart of Delft's faith, the Nieuwe Kerk is dignified and important. When visiting, please dress appropriately, keep quiet, and respect this sacred place.
