Introduction
Panagia Paraportiani stands in the Kastro quarter on the western edge of Mykonos Town, close to the Little Venice waterfront. It is actually five small chapels clustered and stacked together, their whitewashed walls and rounded domes merging into a single sculptural form that looks like limestone smoothed by the sea. Begun in the Byzantine era and enlarged over the centuries, it is often called the most famous white church of the Cyclades. Small in size but unmistakable in shape, it has become a symbol of Mykonos and appears on countless postcards. Soft light at dawn or sunset makes the surrounding lanes and seafront ideal for photos; pair it with the nearby windmills and Little Venice.
