Introduction

Muckross House is the gateway and centrepiece of Killarney National Park: a 65-room Victorian mansion designed by Scottish architect William Burn for the Herbert family between 1839 and 1843. Queen Victoria visited in 1861; in 1932 the estate was gifted to the Irish state and became the foundation of the country's first national park. Upstairs the house interprets the life of the landed gentry; the basement is the servants' world. Outside, a rock garden, water garden and sunken garden run down to the lake, peaking with rhododendrons and azaleas in May-June, while the weaving, pottery and bookbindery workshops still work on site. The adjoining Muckross Traditional Farms recreate 1930s-40s Kerry rural life across three working farms with live blacksmithing, milking and thatching demos; the 15th-century Muckross Abbey is a free 20-minute walk away.
