Introduction
Castello Sforzesco stands on the north-west side of central Milan and is one of the city's most representative castle buildings. It was begun by the Visconti family in the 14th century and later enlarged by the Sforza family into a large fortress with several towers and broad courtyards, its red-brick walls and square layout highly recognisable. Over its history it served as a military stronghold, a palace and a barracks, and today it houses several museums and exhibition spaces, whose collections include Michelangelo's late Rondanini Pietà. Behind the castle lies a large city park used by residents for walks and rest. The courtyards and outer areas are generally open to walk through, while the collections require a ticket, with details following the venue's announcements.
