The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is Milan's most magnificent and oldest shopping arcade. Built 1865-1877 in Neoclassical style, this cross-shaped glass-vaulted gallery features a grand central glass dome, exquisite mosaic floors, ornate ironwork and frescoes, and luxury flagship stores and historic cafes — a glittering architectural treasure beside the Duomo and one of Italy's oldest shopping centers. Designed by architect Giuseppe Mengoni and named after King Victor Emmanuel II who unified Italy, the gallery is cross-shaped — the central glass dome rises ~47 m, with mosaics at the crossing representing Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The floor mosaics include the Turin bull — stepping on its testicles is said to bring good luck. The galleries house Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton flagships and the historic Camparino cafe. It connects the Duomo square with La Scala opera house.
