Introduction

Piazza della Signoria is Florence's political center and open-air sculpture museum. This square, ringed by the Palazzo Vecchio and full of sculptural masterpieces, is the heart and historical stage of Florence, a gorgeous, vivid sight. Piazza della Signoria sits in the center of Florence's old town, the city's political center and heart of public life for centuries (many major Renaissance events played out here). On one side stands Florence's town hall, the Palazzo Vecchio, an imposing medieval fortress-palace with a soaring clock tower, the square's core and Florence's landmark (its gorgeous halls are also visitable). What the square is most praised for is its open-air sculpture museum: on the square and under the elegant Loggia dei Lanzi (an open arcade) are displayed many Renaissance sculpture masterpieces (mostly originals or fine copies): the replica of David before the Palazzo, the imposing Fountain of Neptune, and under the Loggia the dynamic, exquisite Rape of the Sabine Women and Perseus with the Head of Medusa, filling the square with artistic atmosphere, free to view up close. Gorgeous palaces, tall clock towers, abundant sculptures, plus the crowds and lively street life, form a gorgeous, vivid, artistic picture. Visiting Florence and strolling the gorgeous Piazza della Signoria to enjoy open-air sculpture masterpieces is a gorgeous sight.
