Introduction

Marienplatz is the central square of Munich's old town and the city heart of this Bavarian capital—the core of Munich since the Middle Ages, with its grand New Town Hall, famous glockenspiel and lively atmosphere, Munich's most classic, must-see landmark. The square is named after the Marian column (Mariensäule) at its center, topped with a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary, with a long history.
