Introduction

The engine room of the Venetian Republic, its pink-and-white Gothic frontage unrolling beside St Mark's Square, the present fabric dating mainly from the 14th and 15th centuries. The route climbs the gilt Scala d'Oro from the courtyard, threads the councils of state, and ends in the Great Council Hall under Tintoretto's Paradise - at roughly twenty-two metres wide, among the largest canvases on earth. The Bridge of Sighs locks law courts to prisons, and the Secret Itineraries tour descends to Casanova's cell beneath the lead roof. Less a palace than a state machine.
