Introduction

Dam Square is the heart of Amsterdam's historic centre, laid out around 1270 at the dam on the Amstel river — the dam that gave the city its name. On its west side stands the 17th-century Royal Palace, a classical monument raised on 13,659 wooden piles and once the city hall, beside the Gothic Nieuwe Kerk; together they anchor the Dutch Golden Age. The National Memorial in the middle honours the victims of the Second World War. Pigeons and street performers fill the cobbles as trams ding past — Dam is Amsterdam's meeting point and stage, always busy. The palace opens to visitors when unused by the crown, its marble Citizen's Hall magnificent.
