Plaza del Carmen
Introduction
Plaza del Carmen is a beautiful, elegant, artistic and lively charming square in Camaguey's old city—loved for its restored colorful old houses, distinctive life-size sculptures and traditional pottery jars; one of Camaguey's most photogenic, charming corners. On one side is the elegant Carmen Church (a Baroque church with unique twin towers). The square is carefully restored, with old pavement, surrounded by brightly colored, restored colonial houses. Most charming are several life-size terracotta sculptures by local artists depicting everyday citizens—vendors, reading elders, chatting neighbors, embracing lovers—full of life and warmth, a favorite photo spot. With traditional pottery jars, colorful houses and occasional live music, the square has an elegant, artistic, lively atmosphere.
