Introduction

Metropol Parasol is a uniquely shaped, highly modern large timber building in Seville—like a giant mushroom or canopy, hailed as one of the largest wooden structures in the world. It stands out in the ancient old town of Seville, adding a stunning modern touch to this historic city. Metropol Parasol (nicknamed 'Las Setas', the Mushrooms, for its shape) was completed in recent years—an avant-garde, unique large modern building. It sits on Plaza de la Encarnación in Seville's old town, made of several giant wooden units that undulate and interweave like mushroom caps (or giant tree crowns, or a waffle), built entirely of wood (said to be specially treated), with a fluid, grand and unusual form, considered one of the largest timber structures in the world, especially striking and distinctive amid the old city. This unique building is not only a modern artwork but also a multi-functional urban space: its basement houses a museum (showing Roman and Moorish remains excavated here during construction); the ground level is a market and square; and at the top runs an undulating aerial walkway and viewpoint above the 'mushroom' caps. Visitors can ascend to the top and stroll the winding walkway over this unusual timber structure, taking in from this unique high vantage the full panorama of Seville's old town—its sea of red-tiled roofs, the cathedral, the Giralda and more—open and distinctive, especially charming at sunset and when the lights come on at night.
