Torres de Serranos

Introduction

The Serrano Towers are a grand, ancient medieval gate-tower in Valencia's old town—among the most magnificent gates preserved from Valencia's old city wall, this sturdy and elegant Gothic old gate is an important witness to Valencia's history and a great place to climb for views over the old town. The Torres de Serranos (meaning 'Towers of the Serranos') were built in the late 14th century, one of the many gates in the sturdy wall that ringed and defended medieval Valencia (also one of the main and most magnificent gates, an important city entrance and fortification in its day). Although most of Valencia's old wall was later demolished, this grand gate (together with the other Torres de Quart) survived, becoming a precious witness to Valencia's medieval history and defenses. The gate is famed for its majestic yet elegant Gothic architecture—two tall, polygonal towers flank a central gateway, built of sturdy stone, awe-inspiring; the side facing the city is more open and elegant (said because it once served as a prison). Historically this grand gate served many functions (defense, prison, even storing artworks). For visitors, a great pleasure is climbing the Serrano Towers—from the top platform of the gate tower you take in Valencia's old town of endless red-tiled roofs, the cathedral's Miguelete Tower, and the cityscape (especially the green Turia Garden below, made from the old riverbed)—an open vista. Besides, this grand gate is an important venue for Valencia's famous Las Fallas festival and other celebrations.
