Introduction
The Jet d'Eau is Geneva's most famous landmark—a water column about 140 m high shooting from Lake Geneva, one of the world's tallest artificial fountains. It shoots about 500 liters per second at about 200 km/h, majestic; in sunlight it often forms a rainbow, visible from anywhere in the city and the distant hills—Geneva's undisputed symbol. It was first built in the late 19th century to release excess pressure from a hydroelectric plant, later becoming a landmark. Visitors can walk along the lakeside path to the jetty at the fountain's base, feeling its power up close (sometimes splashed by mist). At night it is lit—special. Free and spectacular, the Jet d'Eau is a not-to-miss Geneva sight.
