Introduction
Lindenhof is a quiet high-ground square in Zurich's old town, on the west bank of the Limmat—the best free viewpoint of the old-town panorama. Once a Roman-era fort and later a royal castle, it is now a shady (notably linden trees), gravel-paved open terrace. From the railing you see the twin towers of the cathedral across the Limmat, the red roofs of the old town, the winding river and distant mountains—a classic picture, loveliest at dawn or dusk. On the square locals often play chess (giant chessboard), sit and rest—calm and leisurely. Free, quiet, with great views, Lindenhof is a not-to-miss corner on an old-town stroll.
