Introduction
The Great Temple of Hattusa lies in Corum province in central Turkey and is the central temple of the Hattusa ruins, the Hittite imperial capital, generally regarded as the largest religious building in the city. In the second millennium BC Hattusa was the political and religious heart of the Hittite Empire, and the site is known for its massive stone walls, gates and temple foundations; the carvings on gates such as the Lion Gate are especially striking, and the whole site is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Great Temple itself survives only as stone foundations and partial walls, yet the layout and scale can still be read. The site is large and is usually visited together with the nearby Yazilikaya rock reliefs, so allow half a day.
