Introduction

Sarayburnu is the very tip of Istanbul's historic peninsula, where the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara meet beyond the palace walls — the headland on which Byzantion was founded over two and a half millennia ago. Topkapı Palace and Gülhane Park occupy the promontory today, and the waterfront walk outside the walls is one of the old city's few genuinely open stretches: Üsküdar and the Maiden's Tower to the east, strings of tankers bound for the Black Sea to the north.
