Introduction
Halfmoon Bay, better known locally as Oban, is the only settlement on Stewart Island at the very south of New Zealand. The small bay is ringed by forest, with fishing and tour boats moored along the shore, and though modest in size it holds the island's wharf, accommodation and shops — the gateway to Rakiura National Park. Most of Stewart Island is protected land, known for its old-growth forest, coastal tracks and wild kiwi, and kiwi calls can sometimes be heard around the village at night. Far from the bustle of the mainland, the pace here is slow, suiting a few days of walking, birdwatching and coastline.
