Introduction
The Edwin Fox museum on London Quay in Picton, at the top of the South Island, centres on a wooden sailing ship launched in 1853 and regarded as one of the oldest surviving merchant ships in the world. Its history is remarkably varied: it carried convicts to Australia, then brought immigrants to New Zealand, and took part in other long-haul trades, tracing much of the 19th-century migration and shipping story of the southern hemisphere. After decades of preservation work the hull is open as a museum, where visitors can go aboard to see the holds and displays and learn about wooden shipbuilding and life at sea. It sits beside Picton's wharf area, an easy stop either side of the inter-island ferry.
