Introduction
The Brunner Mine Historic Site on the Grey River near Greymouth is one of New Zealand's most important industrial heritage places. It preserves remnants of late-19th-century coal mining — mine entrances, a brick chimney, the foundations of miners' cottages and coal-handling structures — along with a memorial to the miners killed in the 1896 disaster. Interpretive panels and walking tracks run through the site, with riverside routes linking towards Stillwater. The West Coast was once the heart of New Zealand's coal industry; this is both a historic site and a way into the region's labour history and the rise and fall of mining.
