Introduction
Glenorchy sits at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu, about a 45-minute drive from Queenstown, and is the end point or start of many South Island road trips. The road hugs the lakeshore the whole way, mountains and water never far, and is often called one of New Zealand's most beautiful lakeside drives. The town itself is tiny, with a handful of lodges, cafés and supply stops, yet it is the gateway to wilderness areas such as the Routeburn Track, the Rees and Dart valleys, and Paradise. The surrounding mountains and beech forest have featured in several films, and today the area is known for hiking, horse riding and photography — a good day trip from Queenstown.
