Introduction
Nelson Lakes National Park lies in the inland mountains at the top of the South Island, built around two glacial lakes — Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotoroa — and framed by beech forest and the northern reaches of the Southern Alps. Covering roughly 1,020 square kilometres, the park is known for unlogged native forest, clear water and multi-day tramping routes. St Arnaud, on the shore of Lake Rotoiti, is the main gateway, with a visitor centre, camping and a jetty; summer brings swimming, kayaking and fishing, while the surrounding peaks draw skiers and climbers in winter. It is far quieter than Fiordland or Aoraki/Mount Cook and suits travellers wanting a low-key mountain experience.
