Introduction

The kiwi is New Zealand's national icon and among the world's best-known threatened birds: it cannot fly, its eyes are largely functionless, and it forages by probing the ground with its long bill for vibrations. New Zealand runs more than twenty kiwi conservation facilities, and this one forms part of Te Puia, the geothermal and Maori culture centre at Rotorua.
