Introduction

Turmi is the central town of the Hamer (Hamer) people in the Omo Valley, about 900 km south of Addis Ababa, known for its Sunday market and distinctive tribal culture. It is the base for visiting the Hamer, from where travelers set out to nearby villages to hopefully witness the famous 'bull jumping' initiation ceremony (ukuli bula, usually held after the rainy season, from about March to June), as well as the Hamer's traditional dance, the Evangadi.
