Introduction

The Royal Enclosure of Gondar (Fasil Ghebbi), in the center of the northern city of Gondar, is the grand walled complex of stone castles and palaces built under Emperor Fasilides in the 17th century and his successors, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The enclosure holds several castles and palaces of mixed style (blending Aksumite, Indian and Portuguese architectural elements) and is often called the 'Camelot of Africa,' one of northern Ethiopia's best-known historic landmarks.
