Talek River

Introduction

Talek River is an important river within the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. This tributary winding through the Mara savanna features riverine forest along its banks, serves as a dry-season water source and hippo habitat, and Talek Gate is a main reserve entrance — a key landmark and wildlife hotspot for Masai Mara safaris. A tributary of the Mara River, Talek flows through the eastern Masai Mara. Riverine forest grows along the banks — yellow-bark acacia and figs — contrasting with open grassland, habitat for birds and monkeys. In dry season, Talek is a water source where elephants, zebras, wildebeest and giraffe gather; hippos inhabit the river. Talek Gate is a main entrance, where many safari vehicles enter.
